An Empirical Study of Some x86 SIMD Integer Extensions
Isabelle Hurbain and Georges-André Silber
We benchmark 32 SIMD instructions of the x86 ISA that operate on integers to determine the performance gain that can be obtained for each of them. We show that these instructions can dramatically improve the speed of programs and give for each of them a reference speedup. Using these results, we check whether the state-of-the-art C compilers GCC 4.1 and ICC 9.0 are capable of automatically detect simple cases where those instructions can be used.
